the Provincial Center of Ophthalmology reopened its doors this week; located at Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Provincial Teaching Hospital in Cienfuegos city. This medical facility, first in being opened outside the capital of the country, presents 3 O.R.s, having two microscopes each, able of perform surgeries in about 60 patients a day. However, its present actual capacity is of about 20 daily surgeries since four of its surgical stations are not in use due to air conditioning problems. In its four years of operation, the facility has practiced 25 000 surgeries, showing greater percentages the ones referred to cataracts, laser refractive surgeries, terigium and glaucoma. "The cataracts surgery is the most commonly practiced and it is made both, through tunnelized form, which is the most usually done around the world now-a-days, and through facoemulsification, a more modern and specialized technique". "We also make other types of surgery, such as glaucoma's through filtering and laser surgeries; oculoplastic surgery, cornea and refractive by eximer laser, the latter a new technique in the world", commented M.D. Josefina Garcìa Granda, Chief of Medical Services in the province. At present, the service meets the demands of all the municipalities in Cienfuegos plus its 8 health areas in the main city. Its specialists take part in a program that includes attention to healthy children in daycare centers and schools, inquiries throughout popular councils, teaching, and medical checking, which enable them to admit on time in the Provincial Center of Ophthalmology those patients affected by an ophthalmological condition. Ophthalmology is a clinical- surgical specialty which, by the beginning of the Revolution had barely 38 experts nationwide, an ammount that is now surpassed by the Cienfuegos province which has 64 specialists, a number that by 2010 must grow up to 90. Cuba is one of the nations that has strongly fought against blindness around the world, an endeavor from the government and from the leader of the Revolution comrade Fidel; who had the idea of acquiring the necessary technology and form ophthalmologists for this noble cause.
