Interviews with the crews and inquiries on each passenger are among the first monitoring and control measures to detect symptoms in national or foreign travellers, and this information is sent to health centers. Traffic and safety control measures, in line with international sanitary parameters and demands, include the use of nose and mouth masks, individual medical interviews and a declaration of healthiness. High technology scanners check the body temperature of each passenger. If it’s over 37 degrees Celsius, the passenger is examined in an isolation area and, if necessary, he or she is transferred to Havana’s Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute. The head of the international sanitary control unit of Cuba’s main airport, Dr.Agustín Acosta, told ACN that it’s necessary to redouble epidemiological vigilance and control at Cuban air terminals. With winter around the corner, it’s necessary to increase sanitary inspections in ports and airports, prevention, and risk perception in the face of the A (H1N1) virus, a pandemic already present in some 190 countries.
