More than 700 students -at first year- are formed at the Medical University of Cienfuegos for the use of some models in their education. Roberto Baños Garcia, head of the center refers to the main strategies of the institution of higher education.

How many varieties of studies do apply in here?

"We have to types of models: the traditional one and the other which occurs at the clinic; both of them are looking for a proper relation between the students who begin and the ones who graduate taking into consideration the localities' require".

Can you state the differences?

"The first one occurs here, at the central University, that’s why we give the possibility to the foreign students and the territories which don’t have real conditions to assume such process: that’s the case of Lajas and Abreus. We work for the territories follow the Primary Attention regarding our Health System, each one should have clinics as their health areas.

"That give us –the University- the possibility to work from those places, we provide them with the methodology issues, in order to integrate their labor, as to avoid those s duplicate structures. For that reason, the university clinic groups huge amounts of students as possible

How do they function regarding the rest of the specialties?

"In the case of Nursery, there exists 'the new pedagogical model' with 56 students involved in it. There exit other ‘courses to the workers’ and the rest do it in the regular ones; regarding Psychology, we have 36 and they all belong to the first of such modalities, they are gather in Rodas, Aguada, Cruces and Cienfuegos.

"Those specialties have the difference that they are technicians when finishing their third year and obtain their diploma at the end of fifth".

Which are the peculiarities with Odontology?

"We count on the University Clinics in Palmira, Cruces and Cumanayagua and the rest of the students are studying here in the Medical University. They need specific materials and the dental chair to afford their work. So, we should adjust those possibilities".  

The highest sensibility of the Cuban Health System is being accompanied by a friend ethic of help and collaboration with those poor countries. The foreign students formed in Cuba constitute a priority, a privilege of our system.

Can you refer to them?

"We have students from 51 nations. It is remarkable the students that come from Horquita, they are part of the new program: 1 2321. They all are from Latin American nations. The 30 per cent of our students are foreigners".

It is a national policy that the institutions work together, that’s the case of the Superior Education Ministry and the new Municipal Centers (CUM)

How many possibilities do the students have to accede to the Medical University?

"There are 13 ways to accede here; they come from the Senior Schools, Women Military Service, contests, Military Schools (FAR), technicians from the Health System and some others".

Which are the challenges to this period?

"We enhance the work on the accreditation of the Public Health services, as well as the attention to the student residences. We are also preoccupied for their knowledge in History, Philosophy and other subjects taught in the pre-grade.

 "It is too important the studies professor can be involved in and the development of students with aptitude to instruct the first step to be part of the solidarity group known as 'Mario Muñoz Monroy'.

The Medical Education at its superior step needs to work with the academic and search dimensions, in order to make strength the system of communitarian assistance, at the time to develop the familiar medicine in Cuba.
