It was built in the 80´s. it began functioning in 1991 in an alternative way until 1995, when the Cuban government decided to quit using it for refining oil but to make it work in receiving and distributing fuel.

The "Camilo Cienfuegos" Oil Mill was paralyzed in 1995 and restarted its functions in December 2007, as a result of the cooperation between Cuba and Venezuela through the Bolivarian Alliance for the American Nations (Spanish ALBA).

Its reactivation is the result of an association between PDVSA (branch of Petróleos de Venezuela) and CUPET (branch of the Cuban Oil Enterprise), which began inspecting the facilities in the first semester of 2005.

Since its reopening 2 years ago, it receives an average of 64 vessels a year, so the provincial harbor’s structural framework has been modified.

Cienfuegos Oil Mill will process 65 thousand barrels a day in its first stage and it is estimated that in the second stage the amount will rise up to 109 thousand barrels; for this purpose an enlargement process is being carried out.
