Cuba opened the score in the very first inning thanks to solo shot of first baseman Guillermo Avilés against American starter AJ Vanega. In the following inning Cuban hurler allowed a doble from the best US batter, Michael Lorenzen, with runner in second to tie the game. In the fourth Cuba regained the lead with back to back dobles from Geikis Soler and Jorge Jimenez, and kept it to the bottom of the eighth when fifth batter Derek Starling single allowed the US team to catch up. The Cuban team score the final and winning run when reliever Philip Pfeifer walked one and allowed a triple from the Cuban catcher Lazaro Hernandez who sealed the game's fate. Cuban Omar Luis worked the complete game with 145 pitches, and achieved his second World Cup win. In total, the left-hander allowed 10 hits, walked two, struck out five and had two earned runs. Right-handed A.J. Vanega impressed with his performance, with 13 strikeouts.
