A declaration rejecting the almost 50-year-old US economic blockade of Cuba, which was recently approved in the Summit for Unity of Latin America and the Caribbean held in Mexico, began to circulate in the United Nations today as an official document. The text was submitted to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon by the island’s permanent representative before the international organization, Pedro Núñez Mosquera, so that it can be distributed among the UN member nations, Prensa Latina news agency reports.The document rejects unilateral and coercive measures against sovereign countries for political motivations and, in particular, Washington’s economic, commercial and financial blockade against the Caribbean island. The resolution condemns the implementation of regulations that violate international law such as the Helms-Burton Act, and urges the US Government to end its application. During the Summit for Unity in Mexico last February, the participating countries demanded that Washington complies with a series of successive UN resolutions calling for the end of the economic blockade of Cuba. They agreed that this policy violates international law, causes enormous damages, hurts the well-being of the Cuban people and has a negative effect on peace and coexistence among the nations of the Americas.
