Rogelio Acevedo, President of the Institute of Civil Aeronautics of Cuba (IACC), visited Russia to check on the development of several joint projects which will increase the cooperation between the two countries. Acevedo met with representatives of the Ministry of Transport and members of the Aviation Corporation in charge of aircraft manufacturing, and together they analized the performance of Russian planes in Cuba, which has in its fleet three IL-96 and four Tu-204. The parties discussed as well the prospects of development of such equipment, maintenance and spare parts, Acevedo told Prensa Latina news agency. The Cuban official said they were examining other types of aircraft that the Russians have developed, which may, in the future, with the advancement of tourism in the Caribbean nation and for domestic flights, eventually become necessary. We saw the prospects of ships like the AN-148 or AN-158 and the SU-100 (Superjet), another perspective plane also developed by the Russians, and study their potential in all cases, he said. The Cuban agriculture sector may benefit as well from this cooperation, since the parties discussed issues related to the repair and purchase of the AN-2 aircraft for agriculture, besides personnel training, repair of engines among other issues. Cuba now receives six new radars to replace secondary radars, which have operated for 15 years and have lost part of their capabilities, explained Acevedo and added that Cuba has already installed two and the others will be built before the year’s end, for a total 12 million dollars investment, which also includes spare parts and personnel training. Acevedo also announced that feasibility studies are carried out to set a joint project between Russian Aeroflot and Cubana airlines. Russian planes would carry passengers to Havana and from there the Cuban aircrafts will move these passengers to Venezuela, Nicaragua, Brazil, Ecuador and other countries, he said. The intention is that a passenger arriving from Moscow into Havana should not wait another day, but three or four hours later he will be able to continue towards its destination, which at the beginning could be Venezuela, Nicaragua or the Dominican Republic, concluded Acevedo.
