The 51 House of the Americas Literary Award was officially opened with the setting-up of its jury, made up of 16 intellectuals from 10 countries who will evaluate more than 400 works. In his opening speech, Cuban writer and essayist Pedro Pablo Rodriguez called on Latin American countries to help Haiti in the wake of the quake occurred last Tuesday which devastated almost the entire country. He recalled that Haiti began the liberating process with a social revolution that eradicated slavery. The history of Ayacucho exists because there was a Haitian revolution, that is why America has to save Haiti. This is one of the most prestigious and oldest literary contests of the continent, it awards five categories: poetry, theater, Caribbean literature in English or Creole, Brazilian literature and the extraordinary essay award "Bicentennial of the Spanish American emancipation". The jury is presided over by Argentinean Graciela Araoz (poetry), Ecuadorian Peky Andino (theater), Brazilian Antonio Carlos Mazzeo (Brazilian literature), Mark Macwaltt (Caribbean literature in English or Creole) and Venezuelan Carmen Bohórquez (the extraordinary essay award "Bicentennial of the Spanish American emancipation")
