Cuba insisted on the necessity of respecting the states'' inalienable right to use nuclear energy with peaceful purposes.

It also reiterated that only the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can check the performance of obligations contracted by virtue of the agreements signed by the States on that subject.

The Cuban stance was presented by acting Ambassador to the UN Rodolfo Benitez before the UN General Assembly.

The diplomat said that the US economic, trade and financial blockade against Cuba continues affecting the IAEA activity to execute projects in Cuba.

Benitez specified that it remains and increases the problems that the organization confronts to obtain scientific equipment approved in Cuban projects.

The American companies, or those that have American capital's participation, can not sell equipment to Cuba because they can be fined for doing so, he explained.

Such situation increases our new project prices, because we have to buy equipment far-away, he added.

The Cuban delegate called to guarantee that the supervision process in nuclear issues is carried out fairly and impartially, because it is an essential condition to maintain peace and security.

That is why he urged to eradicate, once and for all, any attempt of pressure or unjustified interference that undermines the IAEA efficiency and credibility.

The political manipulations that characterized the so-called nuclear case of Iran and doubble estandars should have been stopped long time ago, said the diplomat.

Benitez confirmed that Cuba believes that only the total elimination of nuclear weapons will guarantee international peace and security.

The Cuban representative stressed the importance that his country gives to IAEA. He also said they think that organization will continue working without external interference and recognized the work of its director Mohamed El Baradei.

For 57 years, two generations of Cubans, that which preceded us and ours, which led both from the First of January 1959 until today, have fought against the most powerful empire ever known to mankind.
